To young ‘alchemists’ in future

Metallic materials, which have been established over a very long time of periods and contributed to the development of modern society, are still quite misterious or curios for present materials scientists. For examples, iron and steel covers a wide range of strength between 30 ~ 600 kgf/mm2 but are still limited well below its theoretical strength (over 2000 kgf/mm2). Fe-Si alloys are one of the most superior soft magnetic materials and iron nitride has a promising potential as a rare-earth free hard magnetic materials. Titanium, which exhibits a corrosion resistance superior to stainless steels as a pure metal, is widely used in various alloy forms for aerospace materials due to good strength/weight ratio or other applications.
To understand fundamental properties of those metallic materials and develop superior materials functions, clarification of ‘microstructure’ (such as structure, size, orientation and interconnection of crystals) as well as dynamics of microstructure change under various external fields (thermal, stress/strain, magnetic and so on) by using microscopic methodology. Our laboratory welcomes all the young and highly motivated students who are willing to be ‘alchemists’ in the next generations to join us.
